I hope you have read the Passover Seder meal and understand why each detail of the meal had a special purpose for God’s people and for Christians today. Now we will join the Israelites as they leave their slavemasters in Egypt and head for the land that God had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Genesis 13:15, 22:17)

Everyone probably knows from their Bible School studies how Moses raised his rod and God parted the Red Sea and the Israelites crossed over on dry land!  But, remember, God is a God of details and that is what I find so fascinating  when reading God’s Word!

The Egyptians had just lost their firstborn children and were hurting and grieving, as any parent would after loosing their child. But, they didn’t grieve long before they started thinking about their worldly possessions and selfish anger overtook their grief!  They realized the Israelites were no longer there to do the physical hard labor for them!  Desperate to get their slaves back, 600 chariots and their captains led by Pharaoh took off to get them back!  (Exodus 14:5 – 9)

Unfortunately, the Egyptians weren’t the only ones that had forgotten the power God had just demonstrated before them.  When the Israelites saw that the Egyptians were coming after them, they turned on Moses!    They had already forgotten the plagues God had put on Egypt, but had spared from touching them and their households.  Hadn’t God just saved their own first born children from the same Death Angel that had taken the Egyptians’ children!?   Didn’t they just leave Egypt with gold and silver and livestock given to them by the Egyptians that were so eager to get them out of their sight?  Yet, when they realized the Egyptians were coming,  they became afraid and turned on Moses. (Exodus 14:10-12)

How quickly we forget the blessings God has given us and  turn instead to that one thing we want or someone who has hurt our feelings! Don’t be too hard on yourself or the Israelites; I am convinced that we live in a sinful world and Satan is the god of darkness and he loves for us to fail to praise God in every area of our lives!  Perhaps the next time this happens to you, you will stop and remember how ridicules it was for the Israelites to be so short minded!  And you will turn immediately to our Loving Savior; ask Him to forgive that moment and start praising Him for all He has already done for you and will be doing for you in the future!

Meanwhile, “And Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” Exodus 14: 13-14. God will continue to fight for His chosen people, Israel. ( Read 1 Samuel 17:47;  2 Chronicles 14:10;  11;  20:15;  Psalms 24:8 and Zechariah 14:3)

Just like the details of the Passover Seder meal, here are the details that amaze me about  God and what He did to teach Israel to have faith in Him:

• 600,000 Israelites walked on dry land across the Red Sea when God’s strength was in the wind and He walled up the waters on both sides of the pathway.( Exodus 14:21; 22; 15:8; Psalms 74:13; Psalms 78:13)
• This crossing took all night, until sunrise. God’s pillar of cloud and fire that had led the Israelites now went behind them.   It became darkness to the Egyptians so they couldn’t see where to go to attack the Israelites, but the pillar was a light for the people of Israel as they walked across the Red Sea to the other side! (Exodus 14:19; Isaiah 63:9)
• The wheels on the Egyptian chariots became hard to drive and caused havoc among them. (Exodus 14: 24-25 Read Psalms 77: 16-19 also)
• The Egyptians realized too late that the God of the Israelites had indeed protected His people. None of them survived. (Exodus 14: 25-28)

“So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.  Thus Israel saw the great work which the Lord had done in Egypt; so the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and His servant Moses.” (Exodus 14:29-31)

It’s so easy to praise God for what He has done right after He has done it! How long will they remember?
